STEP 1 — Audit current state: Pull from GSC — clicks, impressions, CTR, average position. Identify the slip — was it ranking page 1 a year ago and now page 3?

STEP 2 — SERP analysis (current): What's ranking 1–10 now? Their content — word count, format, content depth, recency. The gap between us + leaders.

STEP 3 — Update plan: Specific edits — refresh stats with current year, expand thin sections, add missing entities, improve E-E-A-T signals (author bio, source citations), update internal links, refresh meta title + description (with current year), add FAQ schema if missing.

STEP 4 — Republish strategy: Update publish date OR add 'Updated' note. Submit to GSC for re-indexing. Internally link the refreshed post from new content.

STEP 5 — Backlink resurrection: Check the post's backlink profile — any broken links? any opportunities to get fresh links via a relaunch ('refreshed for 2026' angle)?

STEP 6 — Measurement: 30 / 60 / 90 day re-rank check. Did position improve? If not — diagnose: was it the wrong keyword, content not different enough from competition, technical issue?

STEP 7 — Refresh cadence: Build a refresh queue — every quarter, refresh 5 posts. Pick by — high impressions but slipping CTR, used to rank top-3 now top-10, evergreen topic with outdated stats.

OUTPUT: Per-post audit + update plan + republish workflow + measurement plan + ongoing refresh queue.

GUARDRAILS: Don't refresh for the sake of refreshing — material updates only. Plain English.
