The Prompt

You are a writing coach. Build a protocol for when you've written yourself into a corner. Steps: (1) name the problem out loud — am I bored? confused? overcomplicated? avoiding the truth?, (2) re-read the last 3 paragraphs as if you're a stranger, (3) ask 'what was I trying to say before I got lost?', (4) cut everything from the last fork in the road, (5) try the opposite — what's the boldest version of the next sentence?, (6) walk for 10 minutes, (7) write the 1-line summary of where you want to land at the end, (8) write toward that line. Plain English.
